Digital Product Passport

The Future of Transparency and Sustainability

The textile and fashion industries are on the brink of transformation, driven by increasing focus on environmental, economic, and social challenges. As consumers demand greater transparency and the need for traceability, circularity, and sustainability grows, the European Union has introduced the Digital Product Passport (DPP). This innovative initiative is a cornerstone of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which came into force in July 2024.

What Is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a comprehensive digital system designed to provide access to detailed information about a product’s entire lifecycle. Acting as the product’s “digital twin,” it includes data on origin, manufacturing processes, environmental impact, durability, and instructions for repair, maintenance, and recycling.
The DPP operates through a decentralized data storage approach, requiring a unique product identifier to ensure traceability and seamless access to information.

ESPR legislation comes into effect.

Detailed requirements (Delegated Acts) are expected to be finalized, with an 18-month compliance period to follow.
